Withybed Green

4 miles. Start/finish: The Crown (A) at Withybed Green, Alvechurch B48 7PN. There is a small pub car park or alternatively, Alvechurch railway station and the Weighbridge Pub (I) lies close to Alvechurch marina. Terrain is good, through fields and along a towpath. Steady hills. Stretches on minor roads and footpaths. Footpaths are well marked.

Follow the road up past the Crown (A) until it turns into a track and then a footpath. The path gently climbs and runs through two fields. The path runs diagonally across the second field. Go over the stile and follow the well-marked path uphill until at last, you start to descend and pass by the side of the buildings.  Cross the road (B) and follow the well-signposted path as it runs parallel to the fence and veers to the left. When you meet the road, turn right (C) and walk to the junction, taking the left-hand road. Follow the road uphill until you meet the footpath sign on your left (D).

Cross the cattle grid and follow the track enjoying excellent views to the Malvern Hills. Eventually, the path descends towards the farm. Be careful not to miss the path as it takes you right (by a large building) and then left (by stables). Pass the pretty pond and at the road turn left by the beautiful 17th Century Cattespool House (E). Follow the road as it ascends to Cobley Hill. It is worth resting to enjoy fine views to the South East.

The road is met by a lane to the left and descends. Take the footpath to the left (F) and leave the road. The path continues the descent running parallel with the road for a short distance and then a copse. As the path descends into an open field it will head toward another copse, however before you reach it, look for a stile on your right (G) which is where the footpath leads. The descent continues with the stream on your left. The path then passes under (!) the Worcester and Birmingham Canal (H). It continues to Alvechurch but we will take the path round to the left and up onto the canal towpath. The canal was completed in 1815 and one of its tunnels, Shortwood, is just to the South of here. Turn right and walk past Alvechurch Marina (part of Alvechurch Boats Hire Company) until you reach the road bridge. Leave the canal and turn left. The Weighbridge (I) is a cosy, unspoilt pub.

The walk continues along the towpath, past the moored boats until the next bridge is reached. This leads to the end of the walk where you started.
